Welcome To Northland
New Zealand's northernmost region has a cultured yet creative environment, providing a relaxing, natural and inviting destination.
Reknown for its long, hot sub-tropical summers and endless golden beaches, Northland has the most coastal area out of all of New Zealand's regions. Cape Reinga, 90-Mile Beach, Doubtless Bay and the Bay of Islands offer a range of coastal experiences, from wild surf and driftwood-strewn beaches to sheltered bathing inlets, uninhabited islands and perfect fishing and boating spots. But don't just take our word for it - the region's sparse population and emphasis on natural resources means many of the most beautiful spots are largely untouched, hidden away waiting to be discovered.
Northland also has one of the longest and most interesting histories. It is believed that the first Polynesian voyagers arrived and settled in the region in the 11th century AD, ending their southward journey and founding the nation the native Maori people now know as Aoteoroa. It was also an early place of contact for Maori and European - the definitive document of early colonial New Zealand, the Treaty of Waitangi, was named after the small town in the Bay of Islands where it was drafted and signed.
With Whangarei its only city, Northland's communities are built around an extensive network of small towns, farming centres and beachside villages. The distinctive local culture embraces art, organic farming and a relaxed lifestyle. Northland's beaches are popular with residents of the larger North Island centres, and you can be sure that no matter what time of year you visit you will always feel a holiday vibe.
