Welcome to Hawke's Bay

The East Cape is both geographically isolated and a world away in terms of lifestyle, community culture and the purest natural scenery. Drive the single road that takes you around the wild, rocky perimeter, and you will soon see that hidden away in the eastern-most corner of the country are some of its best-kept secrets.

The drive from Opotiki, in the eastern Bay of Plenty, to Otamaroa provides some of the best coastal scenery you will see from the road, with perfect opportunities for fishing, snorkeling and kayaking.

The small Maori townships you will discover tucked away in scenic beach inlets demonstrate the lasting cultural significance of the region. Life is peaceful and relaxed, and inhabitants value the traditions and the harmonious way of life of their ancestors.

Visit Whanarua and Maraehako Bays for some of the best secluded beaches, with swimming spots and picnic areas, or drive from Araroa to the easternmost point of mainland New Zealand. Leave the world behinds as you climb the 700 steps to the lighthouse and admire the sea view that stretches for thousands of miles. Stand on Mount Hikurangi, reputedly the first point in the world to see the sun rise, or soak up the atmosphere of the popular holiday spot, Tolaga Bay, and walk for 660 metres along country's longest pier.

Parts of the drive around the cape take you from the sea to mountains, waterfalls and lush native bush, giving a taste of what the heart of the region has to offer once you step off the beaten track. The cape was one of the final parts of the country to be explored, and you will feel like you have stepped into what still remains a lonely wilderness. The true natural beauty is best appreciated by those ready to put on their tramping boots and explore the dense mountainous bush that covers the peninsula.
